What does residential wood trim and fitting cost?

Interior wood trim and moulding installation costs between $4 and $22 per linear foot, simple structures and hourly repairs run $40 to $110 per hour, localized fitting repairs cost $367 to $420 per job, and hanging interior doors sits at $444 to $675 per unit. We do not provide vague ballparks or open-ended estimates. Your quote is fixed prior to fastening and depends strictly on total linear footage, moulding profile complexity, ceiling and wall waviness, and whether your room takes paint-grade pine or architectural hardwood.

Calls require a minimum of 2 hours. Standard one-room trim retrofits, sticking door relief, or plinth block adjustments are executed in 1 visit. All materials are tested with moisture meters before unboxing on your floors.

Why do we reject timber over nine percent moisture?

Wood installed with elevated moisture content shrinks across its grain within two heating cycles, cracking caulk lines and pulling 45-degree mitres open. An electronic pin moisture meter tests every trim board in the hallway before any cuts begin. Readings exceeding 9% disqualify the board from touching the walls.

Moisture Verification On Site Target: 6.8% – 8.4%

Pin-Meter Core Sampling

Calibrated steel insulated pins sink 6 mm into the rear face of baseboard and casing stock. Surface readings lie; core moisture reveals whether kiln drying took the wood down to indoor equilibrium. Lots showing wet pockets over 9% are rejected immediately.

Instrument: Delmhorst Dual-Pin Calibrated Meter

Laser Plumb & Out-of-Plumb Scribing

Vintage Chicago brownstones and mid-rise condos feature plaster that dips up to 12 mm over an 8-foot run. Instead of bending trim into wall hollows, we scribe the timber profile with compass gauges and relieve the rear shoulder with hand planes. The face stays dead plumb.

Tolerance: < 0.8 mm joint gap without filler

Pneumatic Fastener Stud Indexing

Magnetic and capacitive scanners locate wood and metal studs behind plaster, indexing every fastener directly into structural timber rather than drywall. Fifteen-gauge finish nails anchor into wall plates, while 18-gauge micro-brads secure mitered copes with adhesive backing.

Fasteners: 15-ga DA angled brads & polyurethane glue

What interior woodwork do we take on across Chicago?

Four interior carpentry specialities form the entire focus of the shop, where precision scribing and dry materials determine the lifespan of the installation. Decks, poured concrete, and exterior roof framing are left to outside contractors.

$4 – $22 / linear ft

Wood Trim & Moulding Installation

Precision installation of baseboards, door casings, window stools, aprons, and crown moulding. Inside corners are back-cut and hand-coped with a coping saw rather than mitred, guaranteeing that thermal expansion does not push the corner open.

  • • Stock: Kiln-dried poplar, pine, oak, maple, and MDF
  • • Fastening: 18-gauge brads into indexed wall framing
  • • Scribing: Back-relieved edge profiling to wavy drywall
$444 – $675 / unit

Interior Doors & Slab Fitting

Hanging new solid or hollow-core interior doors, mortising hinges with razor-sharp chisels, boring backsets for latch hardware, and relieving sticking door leaves. Every opening is trued to an exact 3 mm perimeter reveal that latches smoothly without rattle.

  • • Configurations: Pre-hung units and custom slab replacements
  • • Hardware: 3.5" or 4" ball-bearing architectural hinges
  • • Tolerance: Uniform 3 mm head and jamb clearance
$367 – $420 / job

On-Site Fitting & Minor Repairs

Single-visit resolution for architectural annoyances: binding closet leaves, cracked casing mitres, scribing cabinet fillers around out-of-square tile, and resetting loose hardwood thresholds. Designed for homeowners needing quiet, tidy repairs in one morning.

  • • Turnaround: Completed within 1 scheduled callout
  • • Equipment: HEPA dust-extracted plunge saw and hand planes
  • • Inclusions: All shims, adhesives, and structural fasteners
$40 – $110 / hr (2 hr min)

Simple Structures & Partition Framing

Interior structural timber framing for non-load-bearing room dividers, pocket door cassettes, heavy shelving blocking, and pipe boxing. Erected laser-plumb and anchored securely to existing concrete or timber subfloors with minimum 2-hour billing.

  • • Materials: Kiln-dried structural spruce-pine-fir and plywood
  • • Anchoring: Heavy structural screws and acoustic isolation tape
  • • Plumb standard: < 1 mm drift over 2.4-metre height

Who comes to your home and how is the work verified?

Every installation, cut, and measurement is conducted by carpenter Ivan Petrov, working continuously in finish woodworking and residential trim carpentry since 2018. Drevantos is not an agency, does not subcontract work to unknown crews, and does not send high-pressure salespeople to your doorway.

Ivan carries trade association membership and has logged 25 verified residential trim, door, and structural carpentry installations across Chicago. You communicate directly with the tradesman holding the saw, ensuring that wall irregularities, floor transitions, and scheduling specifics are addressed accurately before any timber is purchased.

How does a single-visit residential callout run?

Standard residential rooms finish completely in one scheduled visit, eliminating multiple disruptions to home life. Every project follows a clear sequence from first message to final clean-down:

Step 1 • Initial Scope & Measurements
Linear Footage and Wall Evaluation

You send room photos, approximate linear footage, and door counts through our scope assessment form or direct chat. We calculate material volume, verify the profile type, and establish whether your walls require back-relief scribing.

Step 2 • Material Staging & Moisture Check
Acclimation and Pin Testing

Stock delivered from Monroe Street or supplied on site undergoes an immediate moisture check with a digital pin meter. If readings remain below 9%, the timber moves inside along protective floor runners.

Step 3 • Precision Coping & Fastening
Dust-Extracted Cutting & Fitting

Our mobile miter saw station is connected to an active HEPA dust extractor inside your workspace. Inside corners are coped with hand saws, outside corners are glued with biscuit or spline reinforcement, and trim is nailed to studs with 18-gauge brads.

Step 4 • Final Check & Dust Containment Handover
3 mm Door Gaps and Vacuumed Perimeter

Door clearances, latch catches, and mitred joint points undergo a walk-through inspection in your presence. Floor perimeters are vacuumed and all offcuts load directly into the van before sign-off.

What carpentry jobs do we refuse to accept?

Work is declined where conditions prevent lasting craftsmanship. Clear boundaries protect both workshop standards and your renovation budget:

  • Wet or uncured drywall: We will not install trim over fresh drywall compound or plaster that has had less than 72 hours of forced drying. Trapped moisture rots timber backing and pops joints within two months.
  • Warped door slabs: If a client supplies a salvaged door leaf warped more than 6 mm diagonally, we refuse to hang it. A twisted leaf can never maintain an even 3 mm perimeter reveal.
  • Painting and caulking service: We are carpenters, not painters. We install bare wood or factory-primed trim ready for your painting contractor. We do not apply topcoats or silicone caulks.
  • Jobs under two hours: We enforce a strict 2-hour callout minimum. We do not dispatch our van to adjust a single magnetic cabinet catch for $20.

Have questions about scheduling or wall conditions?

Common logistical questions answered plainly before you book an on-site inspection.

Lead times are confirmed immediately upon inspection of your space and material availability. Most stock mouldings and door slabs allow scheduling within 4 to 8 business days across the Chicago metropolitan area.

Either arrangement works smoothly. Kiln-dried poplar, pine, and architectural hardwoods are sourced directly through local millwork suppliers, or owner-supplied trim packages can be installed provided the wood tests below the 9% moisture threshold.

This is standard in Chicago architecture. We do not force stiff wood into curved plaster depressions, which causes the fasteners to pull through. We scribe the profile to follow the wall line precisely, relieving the back shoulder so the visible face stays flat and true.

Heavy drop cloths protect entryways and floors before setup. A 10-inch compound miter saw and plunge saws run coupled to an automatic HEPA vacuum capturing over 95% of sawdust at the blade guard, with intermittent cuts confined to standard daytime hours.
