Architectural Finish Carpentry
HAND-COPED CORNERS
FOUR TO TWENTY-TWO DOLLARS PER FOOT

Tight wood trim scribed to out-of-plumb walls.

Baseboards, door casings, window aprons, and multi-piece crown profiles installed across Chicago. Ivan Petrov scribes timber to vintage plaster hollows, hand-copes every inside corner, and verifies stock moisture under 9% before driving a single fastener.

What determines the price per linear foot?

Interior wood trim and moulding installation costs between $4 and $22 per linear foot. That range is not arbitrary: simple 3-inch paint-grade pine baseboard installed on modern drywall runs toward the $4 floor, while a 7-inch architectural hardwood crown moulding requiring ceiling blocking and back-relief scribing over historic lath-and-plaster reaches the $22 ceiling.

Your quote is fixed after our initial site inspection and depends directly on six concrete variables: total linear footage, moulding profile height and detail, wall and ceiling flatness, complexity of on-site scribing, corner count, and whether the material is paint-grade poplar or stain-grade hardwood. Callouts carry a 2 hour minimum, and standard single-room retrofits are completed in 1 visit.

Why do we hand-cope inside corners instead of mitring?

Two boards cut at 45 degrees and pushed into an inside corner will open within twelve months. Drywall tape, mud buildup, and out-of-square framing ensure that an inside room corner is almost never 90 degrees. Even when caulked, winter furnace heating dries the timber, causing mitres to pull apart into unsightly black triangular cracks.

The first board runs butt-tight into the adjoining corner. The second board is back-cut on the compound miter saw at a 45-degree angle, exposing the exact profile contour. A manual German coping saw and fine wood rasps trace that contour line, undercutting the rear wood by 15 degrees. When pressed against the flat face of the first board, the coped edge locks over surface imperfections. Even if the walls shift or the timber contracts 1 mm, the front line remains visually seamless without cracked filler.

Inside Joint Method
Hand-Coped

Profile relieved at rear shoulder; absorbs building settlement without opening gaps.

Outside Joint Method
Glued & Pinned

Bevel mitres biscuit-aligned or micro-pinned with polyurethane adhesive backing.

Wall Relief
Block Planed

High spots on drywall taped joints are cleared by shaving the rear edge of the casing.

Tolerance Floor
< 0.5 mm Gap

Wood-to-wood contact achieved prior to any painter’s caulk or finish preparation.

How does paint-grade poplar compare to architectural hardwood?

Material choice governs both the machining approach and long-term stability. We work strictly with kiln-dried stock and inspect grain direction before laying out cuts:

Kiln-Dried Poplar (Paint-Grade)
Stable, Crisp Details, Resists Impact Dents

Poplar is our standard choice for painted finish packages. Unlike soft white pine, poplar has closed diffuse-porous grain that mills razor-sharp on coping saws without tearing or splintering. It holds brad fasteners firmly and will not fuzz when sanded before primer. Typical cost: $5 – $12 / ft installed.

Solid Red Oak & White Oak (Stain-Grade)
Heavy Architectural Density, Historic Chicago Match

Standard in pre-war Chicago bungalows, Greystones, and vintage Loop apartments. Oak is dense and requires pre-drilling near ends to avoid splitting when nailed. Mitres are spline-reinforced and aligned to existing floor stains. Typical cost: $14 – $22 / ft installed.

Hard Sugar Maple & Black Walnut
Custom Architectural Casings & Sills

Selected for custom sill caps, apron details, and contemporary reveal casings. High surface hardness makes maple impervious to pet claws and vacuum cleaner bumps along baseboards. Machined with slow-feed carbide tooling to avoid burn marks. Typical cost: $16 – $22 / ft installed.

Who measures, cuts, and installs your mouldings?

Every run of moulding is cut and scribed on site by craftsman Ivan Petrov, who has specialised in residential finish woodwork in Chicago since 2018. Holding verified trade association membership and 25 logged residential interior installations, Ivan handles every facet of the work himself:

  • Zero subcontracting: Direct communication with the tradesman who measures the rooms, verifies moisture, cuts the copes, and pins the joints.
  • Dust containment standard: An active HEPA dust extraction station runs inside the workspace, capturing timber dust directly at the saw blade.
  • Moisture validation: If a delivery of trim stock arrives damp from a warehouse, the pin meter reading is verified and nailing is deferred until dry replacement stock arrives.

How does a moulding installation day proceed?

Standard residential rooms finish in one scheduled visit to minimise disturbance to your home. Here is what happens from our van arrival to the final sweep:

08:00 • Floor Protection & Tool Setup
Runner Mats & Extractor Station

Heavy neoprene runners cover hardwood and tile floors while the miter saw station hooks directly up to an automatic HEPA vacuum.

09:00 • Wall Scribing & Stud Layout
Laser Benchmarks & Magnetic Stud Indexing

Capacitive scanners locate wall studs and floor framing to mark nail targets. High floor points are scribed so the baseboard top line runs laser-level across the room.

11:00 • Precision Coping & Fastening
Hand Coping Every Inside Corner

Inside corners are hand-cut with coping saws. Outside mitres are dry-fitted, glued, and secured with 18-gauge headless brads directly into framing members.

15:30 • Quality Verification & Dust Containment Vacuuming
Joint Inspection and Clean Handover

Every corner is reviewed together on site. Offcuts are packaged and hauled away, floor runners removed, and baseboard perimeters vacuumed clean.
